e-Notes Vol. 3 No. 19a

Jul 22, 2011

THE END IS NEAR

By the end of December, neither Windows XP or Microsoft Works will be available on the Computer College computers or the computers of the Resident Computer Centers!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Support for Windows XP (SP2) was discontinued by Microsoft on July 13, 2010.  If you purchase a new PC it will come with Windows 7.  Neither is Microsoft Works available when you purchase your computer.  Instead, it will come pre-loaded with Office 10 Starter.  So when new computers are purchased and installed in the Resident Computer Centers, they will have Windows 7 and Office 10.  The old Island Computer Center is being enlarged and renovated to become the new Computer College Teaching Center (CCTC) and most of the Computer College classes will be scheduled there starting the fall term.  The laptops on the current Mobile Computer carts will be used for the new CCTC.  These computers already have Windows 7 and Office 2007, which is quite similar to the newer Office 2010.

NOW IS THE TIME!

If you need some help with the new technology, be sure to sign up for some Computer College classes.  Eleven courses this fall will be using/teaching Windows 7 and/or Office 2007.  These range from beginning Level 0 to more advanced Level 2.  (Excerpted from the Fall Brochure)
