Sign up required This course is restricted to residents who already own a Windows 8 computer or tablet, and is intended to help those residents with basic operation of the new operating system. It will not be a full-blown (6-session) introduction to full Windows 8 functionality. Residents can bring their own Windows 8 laptop computers or tablets to class. We will have TBD Windows 8 laptop computers installed in the CTC for use for students who cannot bring their computer to the classroom. Windows 8 comes with a new “user interface” which is optimized for use with touchscreens, making it seem similar to a smartphone or tablet, but you can also use the mouse and keyboard with which you are already familiar. Getting to know some basic actions can go a long way toward helping you get around your Windows 8 PC quickly and efficiently. This course will be in two sessions. In the first session, the instructor will demonstrate some of the basic features of Windows 8.1, including the Start screen; the familiar desktop – how to get to the desktop and use it to do everything that you’re used to doing with Windows 7; and – new to Windows 8 – “Charms”, “apps”, the Microsoft Account, and the Windows Store. The second session will be primarily devoted to resident questions and assistance. PREREQUISITES This course is restricted to only those residents who already own a Windows 8 computer or tablet. Only a few prior skills or knowledge are required for this course. It is expected that you are at least familiar with a personal computer, to include basic use of a keyboard and mouse. |
