Mail Merge is a software function on your computer which enables one to extract many pieces of information from a collection of information, often referred to as a database, and to construct various useful documents. These documents include catalogues, address books, mailing envelopes to a group of names, and multiple similar letters addressed in a personalized format.

All this can be done in a simplified fashion using the software program, a database (or collection of basic information), and a template (a computer format). The most commonly used Mail merge software is that incorporated as part of Microsoft WORD, which we will use in this course, though other word processing programs may and do perform similar functions.
